Cherry orchards became a signature feature of the Door County landscape beginning in the early 1900s. Migrant laborers helped pick the cherries until mechanical tree shakers were developed in the 1960s.
The pickers came from all over — native Americans from nearby areas, individuals and families from the Deep South and Mexico — and in 1945, German POWs helped harvest the crop. All needed housing, and some stayed in cabins like this one. Inside you’ll see pictures of some of the workers who stayed in this cabin, along with pictures of the Willard and Clessie Kramer family who owned and later donated this cabin.
